Using Exposure Compensation Although both can be considered 'autumn scenes', there is a difference between taking a picture of a whole mountain in fall colors or of the foliage on a single tree. Sometimes, even if you find a scene with beautiful autumn colors, the same powerful emotion does not come across when looking at a picture. That is why it is really important to correctly adjust the exposure to get those autumn colors to really stand out. Try using EXPOSURE COMPENSATION etc. to take powerful pictures.
Make autumn leaves stand out against a dark background To take beautiful and clear pictures of autumn leaves on the trees you need to carefully select the background and compensate the exposure. When there is sunlight falling on a tree with autumn leaves, if you select a dark background like a shadowed place you can create a powerful picture with the autumn foliage really standing out. By positioning your subject against a darker background, the exposure conditions will result in a more powerful picture. However, when the contrast between the subject and the background is too high, you may not get the picture exactly right on your first attempt. If your camera has it, try using the BKT function. BKT is a function to take pictures with auto bracketing, meaning that you don't have to take several pictures with different exposure compensations one by one. Instead, the camera will automatically take the pictures at different brightness levels. Taking the same picture at different brightness levels is very convenient especially when it's more complicated to decide on the best exposure settings.

Useful things to remember
When the contrast between the subject and background is high, using the automatic exposure may not result in the best picture. In such cases try using [SPOT]. With [SPOT] the camera measures the light only in the central part of the screen. You can use this feature to measure the light only on a tree with fall foliage to get a darker background and bring out the main subject of the picture.
