Since 1 April 2008, a new management team has been in the driving seat of Olympus Europe. The composition of the new Board is more European than in previous years, and also reflects the strategic significance of Olympus’ business interests in the healthcare and medical sectors.

These developments illustrate the company’s focused drive to evolve its structure in order to position itself for success throughout Europe, adapt to rapidly changing market needs and provide customers with state-of-the-art products and services. Read on to meet the members of the new Board:

  • Michael Woodford is the Executive Managing Director & Chairman of the Board of Olympus Europa Holding GmbH, and Executive Chairman of the KeyMed group of companies. 

    In Europe, Olympus employs over 4,500 people in 29 subsidiary companies, ensuring a closeness to the customer across the continent.

    Mr Woodford joined Olympus twenty-eight years ago and became Chief Executive of its British subsidiary in 1990, at the age of 29.  The company has developed into an organisation which is known not only for its endeavours to achieve excellence in a commercial context, but also its fairness at work policies and contribution to the community.  KeyMed was recognised for two years in succession by the Sunday Times as one of the ‘Best Companies to Work For’ in the UK. 

    In January 2002, Mr Woodford was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the New Year's Honours list in recognition of his support of the community, with a particular focus on road safety.

    In October 2004, Mr Woodford joined the main Board in Tokyo of ‘Olympus Medical Systems Corporation’.  In January 2005, Mr Woodford was appointed Executive Managing Director of Olympus Medical Systems Europe and in April 2008, became Executive Managing Director and Chairman of Olympus Europa Holding, with overall responsibility for the European medical, industrial, life science and imaging businesses.
  • Prior to joining Olympus in 2001, Nacho Abia was the South European Marketing Manager at Sony Europe’s Digital Imaging Division. He began his career with Olympus as the Managing Director of Olympus Spain before progressing to Regional Managing Director for the Iberia region in 2005. He is proud to have established a supportive and nurturing working environment at Olympus Spain, and one of his most significant subsequent achievements was the successful integration of Olympus Spain and Olympus Portugal. In addition to the people he is surrounded by during his work for the company, his favourite thing about Olympus is a corporate culture that allows individuals to develop their business vision.
  • Luke Calcraft has worked for Olympus for 19 years, beginning as a Medical Salesman before progressing through a number of more senior positions, including Head of Corporate Affairs and International Medical Sales, ultimately being appointed as a Board Director for the Olympus KeyMed Group in 2004. He has also worked in the US, as Chief Operating Officer of Olympus Industrial America Incorporated, managing Olympus’ Industrial Endoscope and Microscopy business in North America, and was appointed Managing Director of Olympus Medical Systems Europa (OMSE) in September 2005. In April 2008, he assumed the position of Executive Managing Director at OMSE, responsible for the European medical business, with additional responsibility for the business in Russia and its former territories being added from October 2008, and joined the Olympus Europa Holding Board. In June 2008 he was appointed to the Board of Olympus Medical Systems Corporation (OMSC) in Tokyo. As Managing Director of Olympus Life Science Europa, he is now also responsible for the Microscopy business in Europe.
  • Born in London, Paul Hillman graduated with an MA in Geography from Cambridge University in 1974.  He qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1978 with Coopers & Lybrand and went on to join KeyMed, where he was promoted to Chief Accountant and, after three years, became Financial Director in 1981. 

    His various roles have also included Sales & Marketing Director of Olympus KeyMed, Corporate & Finance Director of Olympus KeyMed Group, Chairman of Algram Group and then, more recently, President of Olympus Surgical & Industrial America and, currently, Group Managing Director of Olympus KeyMed Group, along with his responsibilities as Managing Director of Olympus Industrial Systems Europa.

    Since 1989, Paul Hillman has also been a member of various international working groups and committees within the worldwide Olympus Corporation covering a wide range of issues, including sales and marketing, finance and operations.

    Heinz Jacqui, born 8 January 1961 in Neustadt an der Weinstraße, Germany, studied Engineering and Automotive Technology in Kaiserslautern. In 1984, having successfully completed a degree in Engineering as well as advanced training for the qualification of International Welding Engineer (IWE), Jacqui began his professional career as an R&D engineer at an engineering firm. In 1986, he moved to Drägerwerk AG in Lübeck, where he first deployed his skills as a Production Engineer, then as Production Manager, gaining valuable experience in both roles.

    In 1994, he moved to Shanghai as Managing Director for Dräger Medical. Starting with only 12 employees, he began to build up the Chinese business from scratch. After four years, the number of employees had risen to 350, and the site was extended to several branches across various Chinese provinces. Up to 2004, Jacqui handled tasks in a variety of roles at Dräger in Germany, such as Business Unit Manager and Director of the globally operational Plants and Systems, Neonatology and Intensive Medicine business units.

    Since 2004, he has been Executive Managing Director at Olympus Winter & Ibe GmbH, as well as Chairman of the Supervisory Board at Celon AG.

    In addition to the business culture, what he especially enjoys at Olympus is the opportunity to make a profit while at the same time assisting the company with innovative medical products.
  • After a decade working for German department store chain Karstadt, Stefan Kaufmann moved to Thomas Cook to take on the role of Head of Corporate Human Resources Development. Then, five years ago, he joined Olympus as the General Manager of Human Resources. Since joining Olympus he has re-established the General Affairs Department, then later Corporate Governance and finally Corporate Communications & Marketing Services. From his first day at Olympus he has been very enthusiastic about its people and corporate culture, especially the highly motivated and socially responsible way that we cooperate with each other. He also enjoys the fact that Olympus is a truly international company. At the Corporate Division, he is responsible for the smooth running of business infrastructure as a business partner for the Group Companies.
  • After Masataka Suzuki’s appointment as President of Olympus China, Yasuo Takeuchi has become his successor on the management board of Olympus Europa Holding in Hamburg. As the direct contact person between the company’s Hamburg headquarters and Japan, Takeuchi always has a clear overview of Europe in the context of the world market. “Our aim is to enhance the reputation and value of the Olympus brand overall,” he says. Takeuchi, who received a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Chuo University in Tokyo in 1980, brings a global perspective based on personal experience to his new position. He worked in the USA for 13 years, five of them as head of the Medical planning Division (OMSC/Tokyo).
