Intra Bronchial Valve Treatment

The IBV Valve System is a device placed in the lung airway, intended to treat diseased lung in emphysematous patients or damaged lung resulting in air leaks. The IBV Valve is designed to limit airflow to the portions of the lungs distal to the valve, while still allowing mucus and air movement in the proximal direction.

IBV Treatment: Diseased Lung
For the treatment of diseased lung (for example, emphysema), the valve redirects air from diseased portions of the lung to healthier areas and allows atelectasis if intended. Selected case studies have shown improvement of disease-related quality of life and lung function.

IBV Treatment: Damaged Lung
For the treatment of damaged lung (for example, air leak), the valve limits airflow to injured tissue, which may enable healing. In selected cases prolonged post OP, persistent as well as spontaneous secondary air leaks have been treated.

Biopsy forceps for high yield

The single use EndoJaw biopsy forceps are designed for high yield biopsies during diagnostic procedures with a maximum compatibility with flexible bronchoscopes of a minimum channel diameter of 2.0 mm.

Stainless steal thin edged cup blades with repeatedly precise cup closing enable to take clear cut tissue samples for reliable pathological tissue interpretation.

The swinging jaw mechanism facilitates the positioning of the forceps cups at biopsy sites in narrow lumen and allows for tangential approaches.

The EndoJaw biopsy forceps are equipped with a slim end coated sheath design for smooth insertion into the bronchoscope while allowing sufficient force for bites also in harder tissue areas or in the periphery of the bronchi.

The EndoJaw is available in a wide variety of cup configurations:

  • Single use oval cup biopsy forceps
  • Single use oval cup with needle biopsy forceps
  • Single use alligator cup biopsy forceps
  • Single use alligator cup with needle biopsy forceps

SmoothShot needles for smoother TBNA

Olympus SmoothShot needles have been optimized to enable pulmonologists to perform Trans Bronchial Needle Aspiration (TBNA) procedures as smoothly as possible. The sophisticated design both reduces damage inside the scope channel while ensuring the smoothest possible passage of the needle through the channel.

Outstanding puncture performance and a redesigned handle further enhance operability, while greater versatility is provided by an expanded lineup of needles that can meet your diagnostic needs.

Three types of SmoothShot needles are available:

  • Standard 21G type: NA-401D-1321/-1521
  • Side-hole 21G type: NA-411D-1321/-1521
  • Trocar 19G type: NA-601D-1519

The side-hole type cytology needles allow to draw samples from the side as well as from the tip of the needle for increased amount of sampling material.

The trocar type histology needle is specially designed for a high yield of core tissue and features a two-way safety stop for easy handling and to protect the endoscope channel.

Mediastinal & hilar lymph node staging

With the ViziShot EBUS-TBNA needles Olympus offers a solution for staging and diagnosis of lymph nodes in the hilar and mediastinal area.

TBNA done under endoscopic ultrasound is less invasive and less time consuming than a medianoscopy due to the easy access to the targeted lymph nodes via the airways but with the similar high level of the diagnostic yield.

Olympus offers two different needles for EBUS-TBNA:

  • 22 Gauge needle: NA-201SX-4022
  • 21 Gauge needle: NA-201SX-4021

The surface of both needle tips has an echogenic dimpled design to improve visibility on ultra sound images. To prevent excessive protrusion beyond the targeted site, an implemented stopping mechanism allows a safe and reliable TBNA in the bronchi.

While the 21G is designed to provide increased space for tissue samples and more stiffness for smoother needle penetration the 22G distinguishes through more flexibility for wider accessibility to all sampling sites.

Diagnosis of solitary pulmonary nodules

The innovative GuideSheathKit is designed to increase diagnostic yield of solitary pulmonary nodules by allowing the physician to take multiple biopsies and cytologies beyond the reach of the bronchoscope.

After the guide sheath has been advanced and positioned at the centre of the lesion under x-ray it acts like an extension of the endoscopic working channel. Once positioned there is neither the risk of any accidental displacement nor the need for further fluoroscopy to find the lesion back again.

The guide sheath now allows a safe and repeated access to the peripheral lesion for several sampling techniques like biopsy taking and cytology brushing.

For lesions that are very difficult to target Olympus offers a guiding device with a bendable tip which can be first inserted into the guide sheath for advanced manoeuvrability in angulated bronchi. After reaching the lesion under fluoroscopy the guiding device will be exchanged to the miniature probe for precise positioning of the guide sheath tip and/or the different sampling devices.

GuideSheathKit combinatons:

  • Kits for minimum 2.0 and 2.6mm biopsy channels.
  • Kits with guide sheath and biopsy forceps as well as guide sheath, biopsy forceps and cytology brush.

Olympus Guiding Device:

  • Double bending tip compatible with 2.0mm and 2.6mm GuideSheathKits

Olympus Miniature Probes compatible with GuideSheathKit:

  • UM-S20-17S for a 2.0 mm guide sheath diameter:

Electrosurgery in the bronchus

Immediate medical attention is often required in the treatment of tumours obstructing the trachea or the bronchus.
High-frequency broncho electrocautery is a valuable alternative to laser treatment, providing comparable effects at significantly reduced costs.
Several clinical studies confirm the high medical efficacy of broncho electrocautery.
With a range of four different types of Endotherapy devices Olympus offers a complete solution for successful palliative treatment:

  • Electrosurgery knives
  • Coagulation electrodes
  • Diathermic snares
  • Hot biopsy forceps

One instrument – two applications:
The FD-6C-1 and the FD-7C-1 hot biopsy forceps allow fast and accurate collection of tissue and efficient resection.

Electrosurgery treatment
This electrosurgical probe is designed for haemostasis through heat-induced coagulation and for gradual cauterisation of a tumour.

Other Key Products

Mini Devices
Designed for a minimum channel diameter of only 1.2mm, the mini Endotherapy devices facilitate bronchoscopic instrumentation in previously difficult to approach peripheral regions and pediatric cases. Olympus offers:
- mini grasping forceps, mini grasping baskets and mini snares for foreign body removal
- mini biopsy forceps as well as mini cytology brushes.

Cytology Brushes
The range of Olympus brushes covers almost any kind of diagnostic cell sampling need, focusing on cost-effectiveness, reliability and a high efficiency of bronchoscopic examinations. Thinner nylon bristles and optimal brush hardness increase the specimen collection.

Broncho Balloon Catheters

Designed for selective broncho-alveolar lavage, the balloon catheter is also highly effective for tamponade haemostasis. Balloon catheters can also be helpful for foreign body removal, e.g. to pull up the foreign body into larger bronchi before grasping it. Furthermore the sizing of airways, which is necessary especially for IBV treatment, can be performed with the balloon catheters.

Broncho Catheters
Olympus offers two kind of catheters.
- standard catheter: It can be used for BAL (broncho alveolar lavage), washing mucosa and haemostasis (rinsing with ice cold saline to stop the bleeding).
- spray catheter (see picture): This kind of catheter has a special tip to create a fine mist. They can be used for local anaesthesia, dye spray and drug spray (antibiotics etc.) in the respiratory tract.
