The aim of our workshop is to present the indications for EUS-FNA, EBUS and EBUS-TBNA and to discuss the place of these modalities in the diagnostic armamentarium. Some of the most experienced doctors in this field will be gathered at the workshop to demonstrate their skills plus ‘tips and tricks’ during live video transmitted procedures.“

EUS-FNA: Endoscopic ultrasound guided fine needle aspiration is performed on a routine basis at many endoscopic centres. Since EUS is performed via the oesophagus traversing the posterior and inferior mediastinum, the method of EUS-FNA has been proven valuable for staging evaluation of lung cancer as well as for primary diagnosis of unknown mediastinal lesions.
EUS has hitherto been considered complementary to mediastinoscopy because of the limitations of EUS to reach the anterior mediastinum.

EBUS-TBNA: Endobronchial ultrasound guided transbronchial needle aspiration is a new minimal invasive method, which enables real-time US guided sampling of tissue from the anterior and posterior mediastinum and the hilar regions.

In addition to the mentioned biopsy methods, endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) with miniature probes allows reliable evaluation of the depth of invasion of a lung cancer and the diagnosis of peripheral lesions.
