Exercise-induced laryngeal obstruction (EILO)

Often misdiagnosed as asthma, a breathing disorder known as exercise-induced laryngeal obstruction (EILO) can affect all kinds of people. In order to aid clinicians in making the correct diagnosis, the CLE test was introduced — a continuous laryngoscopy test.

The CLE test is the gold standard in diagnosing EILO. It provides a real time evaluation of the larynx during exercise (patient is running on a treadmill or riding on a bike). The portfolio of flexible laryngoscopes from Olympus can help physicians to make the correct diagnosis, enabling them to recommend the appropriate therapy.

Operating Room Laryngology

In the world of laryngoscopy, Olympus has a wide range of specialized nasopharyngoscopes as well as rigid laryngoscopes. The quality of the image is and has always been the primary focus of the company. Olympus offers a wide range of imaging systems, from full-HD resolution to 4K/UHD . All the latest imaging sytems have built-in Narrow Band Imaging (NBI). NBI is an optical image enhancement technology that improves the visibility of vessels and other tissues on the mucosal surface. Olympus also offers a full line of surgical instruments, scopes, and equipment for the OR in addition to its well-known office products.

Office Laryngology

Olympus is known for the quality of its endoscopy products for the doctor’s office. In addition to this ever growing line of high-class fiber- and video scopes (with CCD on the tip), Olympus also offers top-of-the-line rigid endoscopes. Narrow Band Imaging (NBI) is an optical image enhancement technology that is clinically proven to improve the visibility of vessels and other tissues on the mucosal surface.

Stroboscopy

Olympus offers LED-based stroboscopy, and thanks to the CLL-S1, doctors will be able to perform brighter stroboscopy with flexible video endoscopes and rigid optics. This will achieve greater images for a better diagnosis.

TransOral UltraSonic Surgery (TOUSS)

What is TOUSS?

TOUSS (TransOral UltraSonic Surgery) is a minimally invasive, endoscopic approach for benign and malignant lesions in the upper aerodigestive tract. It mainly utilizes the ultrasonic scalpel as a resection tool and bipolar energy as a hemostatic tool that improves the safety of the procedure. THUNDERBEAT is the only instrument that incorporates both ultrasound and bipolar energy in one device, thus enabling fast and effective tissue dissection and safe and reliable hemostasis. TOUSS uses technology available to most institutions and has emerged as an alternative to TransOral Robotic Surgery (TORS), offering all its advantages while avoiding the elevated costs of acquiring and maintaining a robotic surgical platform. TOUSS was developed by Dr. Mario Fernandez, Department Chief of Otorhinolaryngology at Hospital Universitario in Henares, Coslada, Madrid.

Benefits of TOUSS

The advantage of this technique in comparison with open techniques is avoiding the morbidity of external approaches, as the surgery is strictly limited to the lesion and its surgical margin. For this reason, the technique is especially intended for patients previously treated with chemoradiotherapy, where open approaches have a more marked morbidity.

Compared to other transoral approaches such as laser microscopic surgery, TOUSS brings with it the benefits of the endoscopic approach, which:

  • allows a greater magnification of the focused surgical field (unlike the microscope, which only has a single extremely zoomed-in plane of focus above everything)
  • is not dependent on adequate external exposure for its realization

Head and Neck

The neck dissection is a surgical procedure for control of neck lymph node metastasis. This can be a part of curative surgery for malign tumours at the head and neck, where the risk of lymph node metastasis is deemed sufficiently high. These surgical interventions at the neck require different types of instruments to address the specific needs of the surgeon throughout the various levels of the dissection.

Olympus is a leading company in innovation and offers all the cutting-edge equipment for the SEE and TREAT approach, including latest imaging systems for the SEE phase (VISERA 4K UHD and VISERA ELITE II) with Narrow Band Imaging (NBI) as well as the THUNDERBEAT technology and TOUSS approach for the TREATMENT phase..
