Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection (ESD)

From EMR to ESD

Treatment with gastrointestinal endoscopy has evolved rapidly. From polypectomy to endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR), and now to endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD), treatment has become both more effective and less invasive. With the remarkable ability to enable en-bloc resection of larger lesions, ESD clearly marks a major milestone in this evolution, offering an ideal substitute for open surgery. Driving ESD innovation with unique forward-thinking concepts and proven reliability, only Olympus can offer you a total solution.

Olympus supplies an innovative range of equipment for ESD including the distal attachments to maintain countertraction and a whole range of excellent ESD knives such as: the ITknife nano with a ceramic tip, the HookKnife and the DualKnife. As bleeding frequently occurs during ESD, haemostasis can be directly achieved by coagulation with the ESD knife – or in more severe cases by using an electrosurgical coaglation forceps, the Coagrasper.

ITKnife2

Unique electrode design on the proximal side of the tip minimises invasiveness whilst maximising cutting versatility. It is a safe and fast knife, especially in gastric ESD.

CO₂ insuflation during ESD will give the patient maximum comfort and make the procedure easier smoother. Experts advise to use a videoendoscope with excellent HD and NBI features to have maximal image quality while diagnosing the lesion’s surface structures in order to determine whether the risk low enough to justify the endoscopic treatment by ESD.

With best scope bending features to allow dissection also in compliacted locations – and water jet function – the new GIF-H190 and GIF-HQ190 scopes are setting new standards for this procedure.

Wide range of ESD devices

Olympus offers a wide range of excellent knives and supporting EndoTherapy devices to maximise efficiency and safety in ESD.

Compatibility with EVIS EXERA III

EVIS EXERA III endoscopes combine easy-to-use routine endoscopes with ground-breaking resolving power for efficient diagnosis and optimal visualisation of target lesions.
