The TURis plasma vaporisation electrode is a new addition to complement the established Olympus TURis system (transurethral resection in saline). Unlike conventional vaporisation techniques, it is therefore not a monopolar but a modern bipolar system. By using physiological saline solution as the irrigation fluid and a locally restricted current flow (avoidance of an external neutral electrode) surrounding tissue and nerves are protected, tissue denaturisation is minimized and TUR syndrome is avoided. Using bipolar technology further increases the safety of the operation.

When energy is added, it causes the temperature to rise and its physical state to change from solid, through liquid to gas. If further energy is then added to the gas, the kinetic energy of the elementary building blocks continues increasing with temperature, and the ultimate result is a highly ionized gas containing free charge carriers such as ions and electrons. This form of the gas is called a cold plasma or the fourth state of matter. Cold plasmas have very high energy contents and novel properties that can be put to use in some of the state-of-the-art technologies in our everyday life.

The Process of TURis Plasma Vaporization
TURis plasma vaporization represents the most innovative therapeutic operating procedure for benign prostate hyperplasia. Bipolar Energy transforms the irrigation fluid around the active electrode into a Plasma forming a "cushion" around the electrode. This Plasma, when in contact to the tissue, causes instant local vaporization of cells. As with all TURis bipolar applications there is neither direct contact of the electrode nor current flowing through the tissue. In this way, modern plasma technology makes it possible to selectively vaporize upper layers of tissue without subjecting the surrounding tissue and nerves to any unnecessary thermal load. At c. 0.20 mm, the thermal penetration depth of plasma vaporization is less than in the case of monopolar standard TUR-P. Simultaneous coagulation of the tissue surface means that the vaporization electrode leaves smooth surfaces and enables virtually bloodless tissue ablation to take place. Due to the excellent coagulation properties, the procedure is particularly suitable for treating men with a high risk of haemorrhaging (e.g. due to anticoagulant therapy), but also increases safety and comfort levels for all patients. With the new TURis 2.0 technology continuous activation is possible for easy and speedy operating.

This way the TURis plasma vaporization is a more efficient and cost-effective treatment for BPH than any standard laser vaporization currently on the market (including Greenlight laser) offering optimized results for patient and doctor.

The TURis resectoscope and camerahead are the lightest on the market and designed for convenient and comfortable prostate resection in saline. In addition, the innovative ESG 400 is designed to cover virtually any electrosurgical need, including TURis and Plasma Vaporization.
